Forklifts, also known as powered industrial trucks, are used in a variety of workplaces mainly to move materials. Yet recent figures by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reveal that these vehicles pose a significant workplace hazard: Every year, about 20,000 workers are seriously injured in forklift accidents, resulting in about 120 fatalities. And the number of fatalities associated with forklifts is increasing.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that new operators of forklifts and powered industrial trucks be given both formal and practical training before operating these vehicles; experienced drivers may also require retraining to identify unsafe forklift operating habits that endanger them and their coworkers.
